Dream Job Search Series: Mauritius | Lead Up + Backstory + Day one

Like any good adventure, this one began when least expected.

As part of my annual life audit (every new year and, let’s be real, most every day of my life), I decided to apply for a variety of jobs – from the pinnacle of practicality (warehouse logistics manager locally), to a nearly absurd dream job (traveling the world and creating community among people). To no one’s surprise, the practical job was a lot easier to get, and so I started working locally at a moving and storage logistics company. Without going too into the weeds about it, it was just about as exciting as it sounds. I had given in to the pressures of “regular adult life” and got a job that would pay the bills.

However, just as I was settling into my role and letting my dreams slowly bleed out and die, I received an email, subject line “re: Chapter Host Role Application”. Not a week later, I had already been through 3 interview rounds and was invited to come to a trial chapter (chapter is what they call each location) in Mauritius – a small island nation east of Madagascar.

Now, less than a month later, here I am sitting in a villa in Mauritius and exchanging travel stories with a dozen world travelers. Even the very existence of a role like this proves to me that I don’t have to settle for some job I don’t enjoy. Meeting people like this who are doing remote work full time and traveling the globe is enough to show me the way and sometimes I think it just takes seeing something done to know it’s possible. That’s what I aim to do through sharing here!
